Materials/Tools Needed:

Ethernet cable (CAT5e/CAT6/CAT6a)

RJ45 connectors

Crimping tool

Wire cutter/stripper

Cable tester (optional, for verification)

Steps to Make an Ethernet Cable:

1. Strip the Cable Jacket

Use a wire stripper to remove ~1.5–2 inches (3–5 cm) of the outer insulation from the cable end, exposing the twisted pairs inside.

2. Untwist and Arrange the Wires

Separate the 4 twisted pairs (8 wires total).

Arrange them in the correct T568A or T568B standard (B is more common).
T568B Order (left to right):
Orange-White, Orange, Green-White, Blue, Blue-White, Green, Brown-White, Brown

3. Trim and Straighten the Wires

Align the wires neatly and trim excess to ~0.5 inches (1.3 cm) using wire cutters, ensuring even length.

4. Insert Wires into RJ45 Connector

Hold the RJ45 clip-side down.

Carefully insert the wires fully into the connector, maintaining the color order.

Verify:

All wires reach the end of the connector.

The cable jacket is inside the connector for strain relief.

5. Crimp the Connector

Place the connector into the crimping tool and squeeze firmly to secure the wires and pins.

6. Repeat for the Other End

Repeat steps 1–5 for the opposite end of the cable, using the same standard (T568B) for a straight-through cable (PC-to-router).

For a crossover cable (PC-to-PC), use T568B on one end and T568A on the other.

7. Test the Cable (Optional)

Use a cable tester to confirm all wires are correctly connected and there are no shorts.
